Mukai Farm & Garden is a cultural gathering place that honors Vashon’s Japanese American agricultural heritage on Vashon. B.D. Mukai, born in Japan in 1887, came to America when he was 16 years old. After experiencing different jobs in different areas, he moved to Vashon in 1910. He did so well raising Marshall strawberries that by 1921 he was known locally as "The Strawberry King". The holiday season is approaching and that could mean lots of wrapping. At open house on November 3rd, we will have some hands-on Furoshiki Wrapping practice! What is "Furoshiki"? - Furoshiki (風呂敷) are a type of traditional Japanese wrapping cloth traditionally used to transport clothes, gifts or other goods. Join us on Saturday, February 15th for the Day of Remembrance Open House. The Day of Remembrance marks the signing of Executive Order 9066, which authorized the incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese and Americans of Japanese ancestry living on the West Coast during WWII. 121 of those were from Vashon-Maury Island.
